signs and symbols is delighted to present You shout first, and I will shout after, a six-movement composition; a live performance and experimental musical intervention by composer and musician Rhys Tivey and dancer Natalie Deryn Johnson, using objects in Sarah Entwistle’s solo exhibition at signs and symbols. The score is improvised in-situ and instructs a dancer(s) movement through the duration of the piece.
Conceived by artist Sarah Entwistle with musician Rhys Tivey as an experimental aural interaction within the exhibition, Tivey will improvise the score on material remains found within the archive of the late architect Clive Entwistle – a series of copper and brass spun vessels – the performance marks Tivey’s very first encounter with these objects. The industrially produced spun metal vessels are prototype parts left incomplete, with Tivey's activation as musical instruments they come to have a revived function creating a real-time musical abstraction. Recalling John Cage’s epitome that any sounds may constitute Music, Tivey’s instrumental sound manipulation and use of body and voice explores the limits between movement/stillness and sound/silence.
sarah entwistle (b.1979, London) lives in Berlin. She received her BSc from The Bartlett School of Architecture, London and her Dip. from the Architectural Association, London, where she subsequently taught a design unit. Her solo show In short, in theory and with a bit of luck (2012) at the Architectural Association marked the beginning of her engagement with her late grandfather’s archive. She is the 2014 recipient of the Le Corbusier Foundation Grant for Visual Artists and in 2015 presented a solo exhibition, He was my father and I an atom destined to grow into him, at the Le Corbusier Foundation in Paris. The exhibition coincided with the publication of her experimental biography, Please send this book to my mother, Sternberg Press, 2015. She was the recipient of the Graham Foundation for the Advanced Studies in Fine Art, Chicago publication and production grant in 2014. In 2017, she received a grant from the Arts Council England, Artists' International Development Fund, with which she is developing an ambitious site-specific installation for the Zevaco House, Casablanca in collaboration with curator Salma Lahlou. Her most recent solo exhibition, All that I have acquired in life is yours for the taking, and in fact you must take it (2018), was at Etage Projects, Copenhagen.
rhys tivey is a trumpeter, singer, songwriter, composer, and producer. In addition to performing material from his indie 2017 album, Backward EP, with his band in NYC and LA, Tivey performs as a solo trumpeter, transforming, layering and looping the instrument in a cascade of experimental sound, bridging influences of avant-garde, noise, blues, jazz, and orchestral classical. The debut of this solo material came with the commissioned performance accompaniment to the 2017 John Chamberlain Foils exhibit at Longhouse Reserve, presented by Gagosian Gallery. Tivey absorbed classical composition sensibilities while performing trumpet at Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, and Dvorak Hall in the Empire State Youth Orchestra from 2001 - 2008. A graduate of the NYU Jazz Department, Tivey collaborated with Jean Michel-Pilc in 2014 to record a contemporary jazz project, No Voice No More.
natalie deryn johnson is a movement and voice artist with a niche for poetics. Based in New York City, she performs independently and collaborates with artists of various mediums. Her most recent endeavor is a movement memoire, Patient History: a story exploring chronic illness and elevation. Natalie regularly performs with Christina Noel and the Creature. Her work with Albert A. Garcia has premiered at BAM, Dixon Place and Bowery Poetry Club. She has earned a Scholastic National Gold Key in Photography and attended UC Irvine for her BFA in Choreography and Dance Performance.
