signs and symbols presents Einschnitt, a screening day of recent video works by artist Jeewi Lee (in cooperation with Mischa Leinkauf) as part of artists & allies.

“The geometric line is an invisible thing. It is the track made by the moving point; that is, its product. It is created by movement - specifically through the destruction of the intense self-contained repose of the point” – Wassili Kandinsky, 1926, "Point and line to plane"

Through an infinite homogeneous surface, a person pulls a human load. Physically heavy and slow. Leaving a trace. Drawing a line. Creating a border. There is an incision which divides the equated area and provokes differences in the upper and lower parts that didn’t exist before.

Einschnitt I is filmed at a mudflat landscape in Korea and Einschnitt II in the Alps in Austria.

jeewi lee (b.1987, Seoul) is a Berlin based artist whose multidisciplinary practice (site-specific installations and interventions, video, image series) examines memory, time and decay. Important for her work are the performative marks and imprints of the every-day, collecting and preserving “the trace” as a pictorial element and recorded archive of lived social and historical events. She questions the sphere of visual perception through drawing attention to the unnoticed, the disregarded, and the seemingly non-existent. While traces appear in abstract and minimal form, they contain indexicality and narrative elements; trace (physically and conceptually) exists as residues of past lives, recalling the passage of time; a visual allegory for lived experience – of history, place, memory and the body.

Lee studied painting at Universität der Künste, Berlin, and at Hunter College University, New York. Currently, she lives and works in Florence as part of the prestigious Villa Romana Art Prize which she received in 2018.
